The Commode

The commode is a movable chair/toilet. There are many different types of commode, and the type depends on the functions. Some look just like a chair with a toilet seat, others look like a wheelchair with a toilet seas. They usually have a bucket, or container, underneath. The bucket is removable, for cleaning, after the commode is used. A commode can be placed beside the bed if a person cannot get to the bathroom.  Some models can also be used in the shower.

In the Bedroom

Make sure you have some toilet paper, disposable gloves or Hand Wash.

  • Lock the wheels of the commode.
  • Make sure the footrest is up - do not stand on it
  • Make sure the bucket is secure is under the seat.
  • Put some water in the bucket before it is used, at least an inch. This makes it easier to clean later.
  • Make sure the seat insert is removed.

When you have finished, stand and wipe yourself, using the gloves and toilet paper. If you don't use gloves, make sure you wash your hands with the hand wash or alternatives.

Place the bucket lid onto the bucket to reduce the smells in the room.
